What is matcha tea?
What is matcha tea?
Matcha tea is a powdered green tea that originated in China and became an ancient tradition in Japan. Japan perfected its cultivation and preparation, making Japanese matcha the most prestigious. Before harvesting, the plants are grown in the shade for several weeks. After harvesting, the leaves are washed, steamed, dried, impurities removed, cut, and ground into a fine, vibrant green powder.
What are the properties and benefits of matcha tea?
What are the properties and benefits of matcha tea?
We could make a long list of the properties and benefits of matcha tea, thanks to its high concentration of bioactive components such as catechins, theanine, and caffeine. However, to be brief, we've provided a quick summary of its main benefits:
The high levels of antioxidants in matcha can help decrease oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and improve heart health. The high theanine content, along with caffeine, can enhance focus and promote cognitive function. This unique combination also contributes to its energy-boosting effect. After drinking matcha tea, you won't experience the usual side effects of coffee, such as jitters and high blood pressure. The energy boost is more consistent compared to coffee and can last up to six hours.
Other benefits include strengthening the immune system, keeping blood sugar low, and aiding in weight loss.
What is the best way to prepare matcha tea?
What is the best way to prepare matcha tea?
For preparing matcha tea informally and on a daily basis (Usucha style):
- Select your matcha tea: To enjoy a delicious matcha, we recommend choosing a ceremonial grade one.
- Prepare the utensils: Before you begin, it's important to have all the necessary utensils. A bowl, a chashaku (dessert spoon), a chasen (whisk), a strainer, and a kettle.
- Weigh the matcha tea: Two tablespoons with the Chashaku (a dessert spoon). Approximately 1.5-2 grams.
- Sift the matcha tea: Sift the matcha beforehand to prevent lumps from forming.
- Heat the water: Boil water and let it cool slightly or set the kettle to a temperature of 70-80°C.
-
Mix the matcha tea: Pour a little water into the bowl (70 ml). Begin by whisking slowly near the bottom with back-and-forth motions (crescent shape) using your wrist with the chasen (whisk). Then, gradually increase the speed with "M" shaped movements. Once foam forms, continue whisking while lifting the chasen (or whisk) near the surface to break up larger bubbles and create a uniform foam.
To prepare matcha tea with milk or matcha latte: - Follow the same steps as above (1 to 6).
- Add 150 ml of cow's milk or plant-based milk. Depending on your preference, you can add it hot or cold.
Ready! Enjoy your Tedelics matcha tea.

How much caffeine does matcha tea contain? When can you drink matcha tea?
One gram of matcha contains around 35 mg of caffeine (compared to 80 mg in a cup of coffee), so it's ideal to enjoy it during the first half of the day! The great thing is that, thanks to L-theanine, the caffeine in matcha tea is released gradually, keeping you focused.
It is not recommended to consume matcha on an empty stomach or while fasting, especially for those who are new to matcha or have a sensitive stomach, as its high tannin content can cause discomfort.
How to store matcha tea?
How to store matcha tea?
Matcha tea is particularly sensitive to light and heat, which can cause it to lose its properties. Therefore, it should be kept in its original packaging and stored in a cool, dark place. If you consume it daily, it doesn't need to be refrigerated. However, if you only consume it occasionally, it's advisable to store it in the refrigerator, always well covered, to prevent it from absorbing odors from other foods.
