What's so special about this tea?

This tea-growing region is located near the small village of Laulee in Chiang Rai province, Thailand, close to the borders with Myanmar and Laos. It sits at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, in an area predominantly covered with centuries-old trees that reach 3 to 5 meters in height. This small region is renowned for producing some of Thailand's finest pu-erh teas.

This batch is made exclusively with hand-picked leaves from trees between 400 and 500 years old. It is produced by the same family that has been making pu-erh for Hong Tai Chang since the mid-20th century, the historic and renowned pu-erh factory that began in Yibang, Yunnan, China, and later expanded its operations to Thailand. Over decades, the family perfected their technique, which is reflected in the exceptional quality of this tea. During our visit, we had the opportunity to spend time with them and witness the meticulous care they take throughout the entire production process.

This is a fine example of ancient tree pu-erh sheng from northern Thailand, complex, balanced, and with great potential for development in multiple infusions. The aroma is reminiscent of old wood, eucalyptus, honey, apple compote, dried orange, herbs, and clove. The mouthfeel is rich, with a slight bitterness and no astringency, while notes of chamomile and anise, nutmeg, traditional Chinese medicine, leather, honey, and wood emerge.
